Sheffield United manager Nigel Clough has been backed to assemble a “promotion side” in the summer, by Bramall Lane director James Phipps.
Speaking to United fans in a forthright exchange of views on social networking site Twitter, Phipps said: “The gaffer [Clough] makes all the calls on transfers, in and out, and the Managing Director [Mal Brannigan] then negotiates the deals. But we are properly resourced to have a promotion side.
“Any decisions that the gaffer makes in the transfer market will be made for the right reasons, and the board only gets involved when we are out of budget, over the pay scale or off process.
“He has a good track record with buying and selling players, and he knows what he’s doing. We have full confidence in Nigel and Co. on the footballing side, and Mal on the business side.”
