Chris Wilder has revealed how much Sheffield United means to him as he prepares to lead his Blades into the history books at Bramall Lane.

United, without a game this weekend, sit 13 points clear of third-placed Fleetwood Town in the League One table, and seven ahead of Bolton in second.

And Wilder, speaking ahead of the home game against Coventry City on Wednesday, admitted: “We have an opportunity to go into the history books of a fantastic, special old club.

“The club has had its ups and downs, there’s no getting away from that, and you must have something about you to be a fan of this club; you certainly can’t be a glory hunter, put it that way.

“It’s been through the mill over the years, on and off the pitch, but it’s always stood together as a well respected and proud club.

“We all understand that there’s an opportunity, over the next few weeks, to be a part of something special and we have to go and make it happen now.”

Wilder, pictured above, believes that United’s six remaining games are the biggest since the club dropped out of the Premier League a decade ago, and added: “That’s not putting pressure on the players; there’s always pressure here, whether you’ve got one point from 12 or are top of the division.

“So it doesn’t really change from that point of view. But if you gave me the option of being top or chasing someone else, I know where I’d rather be, where the players would rather be and where the fans would rather be.”
