Hull City manager Steve Bruce will continue his pursuit of Sheffield United defender Harry Maguire - even if top transfer target Joleon Lescott accepts his invitation to move to the KC Stadium.
Bruce has focused his efforts on persuading England international Lescott to join him in East Yorkshire - but faces stiff competition from Alan Irvine, his counterpart at West Bromwich Albion.
As revealed in yesterday’s Star, the signing of Maguire is not an immediate priority for Bruce, who is yet to submit a formal bid for the England U21 international.
But with the Tigers facing a punishing fixture schedule which will see them compete in Europe, as well as on three fronts domestically, the former United manager is keen to bolster his options - and may still make a move for Maguire, even if his pursuit of Lescott is ultimately successful.
Wolverhampton Wanderers, last season’s League One champions, also remain in the hunt for Maguire. Molineux boss Kenny Jackett has had two bids, believed to be in the region of £1m and £1.5m, rejected by the Bramall Lane board.
