Sheffield United manager Nigel Adkins has urged his team not to hand Bury the initiative during today’s League One encounter at Bramall Lane, writes James Shield.

Adkins issued the directive after explaining why the home support could also have a crucial role to play if United find themselves being dragged into a war of attrition by David Flitcroft’s side.

Lee Turnbull, United’s head of scouting and recruitment, watched Bury beat Walsall last weekend and Adkins, confirming he has analysed the video of that match, said: “There are no easy games and the first goal is so important. We don’t want the away team to get it and then have something to hang onto.

“But our supporters were great against Blackpool and they knew we had to be patient. They changed the way the played and it took us an hour to break them down.

“It might be the same or even longer to do it again. Our desire has to be to break teams down. We need that drive to do it but also the passion in the stadium.”

United, who are preparing to make their first appearance on home soil since last month’s 2-0 victory over Blackpool, face a quick turnaround following this afternoon’s contest with Colchester scheduled to visit South Yorkshire on Tuesday.

David Edgar is available for selection after representing Canada in Belize earlier this week while Ryan Flynn and Terry Kennedy could also feature after recovering from injury.

“Bury will be very difficult,” Adkins said. “They beat the leaders last week away from home. They scored early and defended well with a great threat on the counter. They can play too. Perhaps they were a little bit expansive at the start of the season but they’ve shored it up now. Bury will come here and play, let’s not kid ourselves about that.

“Our objective is to win the game though. We’ve got two coming up in quick succession and we want to win them both to keep moving forward and to keep our momentum.”
