Nigel Adkins has vowed not to rush key players, including Matt Done, Bob Harris and John Brayford, back from injury in a bid to turbo-charge Sheffield United’s promotion push, writes James Shield.

Adkins issued his pledge after confirming that medical staff at Bramall Lane have established an audit system designed to prevent fitness issues from hijacking the club’s performances this term.

Confirming that midfielder Paul Coutts, who has yet to make an appearance since May’s play-off semi-finals, is scheduled to feature for the under-21’s next week, the United manager said: “It’s hard when players miss pre-season. In the injury audits that we do and have done in the past, they tell us that people who do are often affected by little niggles during the course of it. So we are very mindful of that and we want to make sure that, when they are back they stay back.”

“”Bob has had his hernia op and is recovering from that,” Adkins added. “He’s been running but is not quite ready to join in. We’ve got Matty involved in some of the football work he do but it’s non-contact because we want the collarbone to heal, John has shown a great attitude and they’re all doing everything they can to be fit and ready, hopefully for around October time.”
