Scunthorpe have been undergoing a crash course in scoring goals ahead of this afternoon’s game against Sheffield United, writes James Shield.

David Kelly, the hosts’ assistant manager, made the revelation despite insisting they are “unfortunate” enter the League One contest having failed to win any of their last five outings.

“We need to make the ‘keeper work a more,” he said. “We were talking about it, the fact we’ve had the best part of 100 chances or opportunities on goal over the last six games.

“That’s an incredible amount but we’ve not been able to convert as many as we’d have liked.

“I think there’s been a little bit more emphasis in training, about working the keeper, hitting targets and making sure we don’t miss things when we’re in critical areas.”

Although Mark Robins, the Scunthorpe manager, is thought to have considered changing the shape of his team, Kelly indicated they will persevere with the system which sees a lone centre-forward operate in front of three midfielders.

“We’ve put the effort in,” he said.
