SHEFFIELD United were last night applying the finishing touches to the deal which will see Walsall defender Darryl Westlake become their latest signing.
United, who yesterday drew their friendly at Ilkeston, opened talks with their League One rivals aimed at negotiating a fee for the 21-year-old a week ago.
Although Westlake’s contract expired at the end of last season, Walsall are entitled to compensation because they offered him a fresh deal.
With Westlake’s transfer still to be formally completed, United manager Danny Wilson named the 21-year-old as a ‘trialist’ substitute at the New Manor Ground.
“We haven’t agreed anything with Walsall yet,” Wilson said. “But it speaks volumes about Darryl that he wanted to be involved.”
Former Rotherham United centre-half Luke Foster also featured on United’s bench against Ilkeston.
Wilson, has not received an official approach from Leeds for Stephen Quinn, said: “Luke isn’t on trial but he is training with us.”
The Star reported earlier this summer that Quinn could feature on Neil Warnock’s wanted list at Elland Road.
