Manager Nigel Clough will redouble his attempts to bring in defensive reinforcements on loan before Sheffield United take on Chesterfield at the Proact on Saturday.
The Blades boss, who yesterday watched Diego De Girolamo net a hat-trick in United’s 4-1 U21 win over Brentford, was close to making a temporary signing before Saturday’s dramatic victory over Gillingham. Following Harry Maguire’s move to Hull City, Neill Collins and 18-year-old Harrison McGahey are Clough’s only recognised centre-halves, although Terry Kennedy is stepping up his rehabilitation following knee surgery.
And the United boss confirmed: “We’ll keep trying, and hopefully get something done before Saturday.
“We were pretty close last week but we’ll try again. A defender is definitely the priority - we have plenty of midfielders. We had Chris Basham on the bench against Gillingham, and we felt bad leaving Stephen McGinn out after a very good performance in midweek.”
Clough, however, could be boosted by the return of Jamal Campbell-Ryce from injury. But Jose Baxter is once again espected to miss out.
