Ioan Evans hopes to cement his place in the Wales squad which will attempt to qualify for the 2014 UEFA under-17 Championship finals next month when Geraint Williams’ side face their counterparts from Malta this afternoon, writes James Shield.
The behind-closed-doors fixture at Newport is the opening instalment of a double-header designed to prepare for contests against Slovenia, Hungary and Scotland. Evans is the sixth Sheffield United player to be selected for international duty this month with the likes of George Long (England), Sean McGinty (Northern Ireland) and Connor Dimaio (Republic of Ireland) also called-up by their respective countries.
Evans, a defender, was a member of the United under-18 team which opened its Professional Development League Two North campaign by drawing 2-2 with Leeds last weekend. Ben Whiteman and Joe Coustrain were on target for Travis Binnion’s charges.
“A draw was probably a fair result and on the balance of play the lads deserved a point,” Binnion said. “We started brightly and had lots of corner and set-pieces in the first 15 minutes of the game.”
United under-18’s return to action when they visit Sheffield Wednesday this weekend before hosting Crewe Alexandra at the Redtooth Academy on August 31.
