Sheffield United were last night holding talks with Scunthorpe aimed at delivering Lee Turnbull, the former Middlesbrough centre-forward, to Bramall Lane.

Nigel Adkins wants to appoint Turnbull as his new chief scout as part of an organisational reshuffle behind the scenes.

Sources at Glanford Park, where Adkins twice won promotion before achieving the same feat with Southampton, refused to confirm whether a compensation package for the 47-year-old had been agreed. However, United are thought to be confident of unveiling Turnbull as the latest addition to their coaching staff before Adkins’ squad begins pre-season training on Monday.

The development marks the latest phase of a makeover which Adkins, with assistant Andy Crosby and first team coach Dean Wilkins, believes can help lead their employers back into the Championship.

Turnbull, who also represented Chesterfield and Doncaster as a player, was responsible for signing the likes of Gary Hooper, Martyn Woolford and Martin Paterson to Scunthorpe.
