Sheffield United manager Nigel Adkins must decide whether to delay his proposed move for Dan Burn or risk seeing the Fulham defender leave Bramall Lane before the Christmas period, writes James Shield.

Football League rules permit clubs to sign players for a maximum of 93 days during the emergency loan window, meaning Burn would be forced to return to London in December if his transfer was processed this week.

As The Star revealed last month, United held talks with their counterparts in the capital aimed at recruiting the 23-year-old ahead of the recent deadline for permanent deals. However, those negotiations were scuppered by a contractual matter which proved impossible to overcome before the window closed.

Sources close to the talks last night confirmed they were “polite” and “cordial” with United “fully understanding” of Fulham’s decision not to grant the green light until their own purchase of Richard Stearman from Championship rivals Wolves was ratified.

With David Edgar and Neill Collins forming an impressive partnership at the heart of defence, the return to fitness of Terry Kennedy and Harrison McGahey could convince Adkins to place his interest in Burns on hold until later this month. Jay McEveley, Chris Basham and Kieran Wallace can also provide cover at centre-half although Adkins has made no secret of the fact he wants to acquire reinforcements.
