Sheffield United supporters have been told ‘Your club needs you’ ahead of tonight’s pivotal League One match against Doncaster Rovers, writes James Shield.

Andy Garner issued his plea after describing the 5322 fans who made the journey to Barnsley last weekend as being instrumental in the victory over Lee Johnson’s side.

United can edge a step closer towards qualifying for the end of season play-offs with another South Yorkshire derby success this evening and Garner, their first team coach, said: “If we can get the same type of backing at our place, in every single game between now and the end, that we had at Oakwell then that’s going to be huge for us.

“Yes, we understand the frustrations when things don’t go well at times. We feel it as much as anyone, let me assure you of that and we also understand some of those people pay our wages.

“But never underestimate the power of the crowd either.

“The lads were superb (at Barnsley) and the noise coming from the away end was a massive factor in that. It was a big a factor in what we did as anything else.”

The frustrations Garner was referring to were exasperated when United, fifth in the table with six games left, suffered a home defeat to Crewe Alexandra last month.

Speaking as Nigel Clough’s team prepare for their first outing at Bramall Lane since that match, Garner added: “Barnsley had momentum coming into this game and we’d lost to Crewe. The crowd weren’t very happy.

“But we did what we had to do and that was move on. You’ve got to let things like that go and, man to man, every single one of the lads did.”
