Sheffield United are set for a seven figure financial windfall after being drawn against Manchester United in last night’s FA Cup third round draw.

Cambridge United banked over £1.5m when they travelled to Old Trafford at the fourth phase of the tournament earlier this year and Bramall Lane’s hierarchy, who yesterday performed a major boardroom reshuffle, will be hoping for similar returns as they prepare to visit the home of the 13 time Premier League champions.

Speaking before his team’s second round victory over Oldham Athletic three days ago, United manager Nigel Adkins admitted being paired with one of English football’s leading names could act as a “catalyst” for a series of improved results in the league.

“A win would give everyone a boost ahead of what is another hectic period,” he said. “But we are all pulling in the same direction and the harder we work for each other, the better opportunity we have of turning things around.”

“We want to give the fans something to shout about,” Adkins continued. “And something to look forward too.”

Meanwhile, United have confirmed that managing director Mal Brannigan has left his position with “immediate effect” after spending nearly two years in South Yorkshire.

“The board places on record it thanks to Mr. Brannigan for his enthusiasm, positivity, energy and for his devotion to and sacrifice for the club throughout his service,” a statement read.
