THOUSANDS of Sheffield United and Huddersfield Town fans on their way to the League One Play-Off Final at Wembley were delayed after a serious crash on the M1 motorway - but it didn’t stop them singing, writes Graham Walker.
The Highways Agency reopened the M1 motorway at Junction 10 early this afternoon, but with less than an hour to kick off, some supporters feared they might miss the 3pm kick off.
The ‘serious crash’ involved a car and a coach near Luton earlier on Saturday morning, at 6.55am.
Tailbacks of nine miles were reported with motorists sat in traffic for more than two hours.
A passenger in the car was taken to hospital with serious injuries and two other people were taken to hospital for treatment.
No-one travelling on the coach was injured.
Thousands of sports fans were heading down to London today, for the League One Play-Off final and the Guinness Premiership final at Twickenham, between Leicester and Harlequins.
The Football League confirmed they are aware of the problem and they would continue monitoring it.
