Nigel Adkins, the Sheffield United manager, is confident Dominic Calvert-Lewin will reap the benefit of his experiences at Northampton Town.

Calvert-Lewin joined the League Two club on loan earlier this season after impressing during United’s summer friendly programme and, having blossomed under Chris Wilder’s tutelage, enters its match against Notts County tomorrow searching for his eighth goal in 19 games.

“Chris is down there and his assistant is Alan (Knill) who I was at Scunthorpe with,” Adkins told The Star. “So we know he’s going to be well looked after because they are two top class and very knowledgeable people. Dom comes in to see us regularly and we watch and get reports on all of his games. I saw him recently at four o’clock on a Sunday afternoon here doing his weights. Then we had a chat on the Monday to see how everything is going and go through the reports. Dom is a great lad as well as a very promising player so as long as we keep that smile on his face.”

Adkins, who also worked at Southampton before taking charge of United in June, confirmed he will continue using the loan system to reinvigorate or progress the careers of his players.

“The prime example is Jason Puncheon, who we had a St Mary’s,” Adkins said. “It wasn’t working so he went to Blackpool, came back, and was doing great in the Premiership. He’s doing the same now at (Crystal) Palace too. There’s an incentive for people like Michael Higdon, who we’ve got out at Oldham, there. The same goes for Marc (McNulty) at Portsmouth. We knew Dom probably wouldn’t, at this stage, be in our first team group on a regular basis but he’s playing there and that’s exactly what we wanted. It’s all about his development.”
