Jose Baxter says the wave of criticism Sheffield United faced following their defeat by Chesterfield has only made them even more determined to prove the doubters wrong, writes James Shield.

Baxter, who missed last weekend’s derby at the Proact Stadium through injury, claimed “some people can’t wait to see” United fail after marking his return to action with a goal during Tuesday’s Johnstone’s Paint Trophy success over Hartlepool.

Nigel Clough’s side resume their League One campaign when Leyton Orient visit Bramall Lane tomorrow and Baxter told The Star: “I feed off that negativity. People don’t want to see us do well.

“That’s something I thrive on, trying to go out there and silence your critics. Then, when you do, you can just give them a little cheeky smile and move on.”

United, who enter their meeting with Orient 11th in the table, have lost just twice since a 1-0 reverse at Coventry City on August 16.

Baxter added: “When you’re the favourites, people look and can’t wait to see you lose. They’re always hoping you are going to fall at the final hurdle.

“But that’s not what’s happened here. We’ve lost two games in 11 and I think it’s important people remember that.

“Some people have had a little bit more success than us at the start of the season. But we’ve had a tough start when you look at the fixtures, tougher than most to be hontest, and yet we’re still in touch.”

Clough described Baxter, aged 22, as a “game-changer” during the aftermath of United’s 2-1 triumph at Victoria Park before also calling for a sense of perspective when it comes to judging their results following a hectic summer in the transfer market.

“I enjoy the highs and lows, it’s part and parcel of football these days,” Baxter said. “This is always a tight division.”
