Nigel Adkins believes Sheffield United possess the firepower to wreak havoc among League One defences next season, writes James Shield.

Adkins, who took charge at Bramall Lane last month, issued his assessment after completing swoops for Conor Sammon and Billy Sharp.

Describing Sharp’s arrival from Leeds as a cast-iron guarantee of goals, Adkins told The Star: “We know, with Billy, what he’s going to do.

“We know his strengths, his attributes. We’ll give him the opportunity to score goals.

“What we’ve got with Billy and Conor is different attributes. Different ways to score.

“It’s a demanding campaign - Saturday, Tuesday, Saturday, Tuesday - and you need that flexibility.”

Sharp is expected to begin his third spell as a United player during tomorrow’s friendly at Macclesfield.

Together with Sammon, signed on a long-term loan from Derby County, he will compete with the likes of Marc McNulty, Che Adams, Michael Higdon, Jamie Murphy and Matt Done for a place in Adkins’ starting eleven.

With United now turning their attentions to bolstering Adkins’ defensive options, he said: “This is the fourth time we’ve worked with Billy after Scunthorpe, Southampton and Reading. We know he will score goals in League One.

“We’ve got promotions with him and, like Conor, he’s played at a higher level. They know the demands.

“We’ve got excellent youngsters and experienced players who they’ll learn from. But they can all learn from Dean Wilkins and Andy Crosby too who are excellent coaches.

“We’re really pleased with the forward attacking options here now.”
