Sheffield United were last night paired with Worcester City, of the Vanarama National League North, in the FA Cup first round draw.

Nigel Adkins’ side will host their non-league counterparts next month as they bid to repeat their march to the semi-finals 18 months ago.

Despite conceding that reaching the Championship is his number one priority this term, Adkins has disputed suggestions that progress in knockout competition could hinder United’s effort to win promotion.

“Every footballer, every football manager or coach will tell you the same thing,” he said. “That you want to win every single game. There is no such thing as a good one to lose.”

Jim Phipps, United’s co-chairman, yesterday confirmed that United had generated funds of around £4m en route to Wembley in April 2014. Worcester are 18th in the National League and beat Gateshead in the fourth round of qualifying. Deon Burton, the former Sheffield Wednesday, Barnsley and Rotherham centre-forward scored both their goals in a 2-1 win.

“We want to build momentum and you do that by winning football matches,” Adkins, speaking before the draw was made, added. “No matter what the competition is, we always treat it with the utmost respect and want to do as well as we possibly can. There are no exceptions but, yes, we know what we want to do and where we want to be come the end of the season.”

Worcester, who play their home games at Aggborough, beat Coventry City in the first round last season when Sean Geddes also claimed a brace.

United, meanwhile, host their Yorkshire rivals Bradford City in the first round of the FA Youth Cup this evening. (kick-off 7pm). United were beaten in the final of the tournament in 2011 when they were beaten 6-3 on aggregate by their namesakes from Manchester. Callum McFadzean, George Long and Terry Kennedy all featured for United while Paul Pogba and Ravel Morrison, now of Juventus and Lazio respectively, started for the eventual winners.

United beat Hartlepool in the first round last season but were subsequently knocked out by Fleetwood Town.
