SHEFFIELD UNITED were looking for their eighth home win of the season today, but couldn’t open up a plucky Carlisle United reduced to 10-men for the final 20 minutes.

Tony McMahon and Kevin McDonald both fashioned chances early on - but it was to be an Easter Monday afternoon of frustration in front of goal.

Barry Robson had also despatched the ball into to some interesting areas in the early stages.

And on 18 minutes, Harry Maguire grasped at a chance from close range but his effort went wide right of the goal.

Maguire was a pain for Carlisle to deal with.

He met at Robson corner with a header, but it went over the bar.

The 20-year-old was a commanding figure at the back, also.

McDonald disturbed goalie Mark Gillespie with two efforts in three minutes.

But quality clear-cut chances were at a premium at Bramall Lane.

That changed on 43 minutes when the recalled midfielder Liam Noble volleyed on to the Blades’ post, from the edge of the box.

The second half saw two home substitutions; Matthew Hill went off for Danny Higginbotham and Jamie Murphy on for Dominic Poleon.

Murphy tried to make a quick impact but Gillespie ended the danger.

The home fans were starting to get a tad restless, some unhappy about passes going astray.

Danny Wilson then made his final substitution, Dave Kitson replaced by Joe Ironside on 63 mins.

There was a let-off for the Blades Frank Simek’s cross was headed wide by Sean O’Hanlon.

That was the last contribution from O’Hanlon, who was red-carded for a second bookable offence on 73 minutes.

This was United’s chance to grab three points.

Ironside and Michael Doyle failed to hit the target as did Jonathan Forte and Tony McMahon.

At the death, Neill Collins could have won it - but Carlisle walked off with a share of the spoils.
