SHEFFIELD United hope to play a friendly against a leading Italian side this summer after announcing they will once again visit Malta as part of their pre-season preparations.
Danny Wilson’s squad are scheduled to stay at the Fortina Spa Resort between July 20 and 27 as part of their long-standing sponsorship agreement with the leading Sliema hotel.
Dave McCarthy, United’s managing director, said: “We are hopeful of playing Serie A opposition during our week in Malta as well as arranging a second match, possibly against one of the local Maltese Premier League clubs.
“There will also be special supporters events attended by the players.
“We have been staging tours in Malta for a few seasons now and they’ve proved really popular with fans and players alike.
“Due to the generosity of the Fortina Hotel chain and Spa Travel we are able to provide some terrific deals for our fans who want to go, including special deals for children which we hope will be especially popular this year as it is the first time we will be touring Malta during the school holidays in the United Kingdom.”
McCarthy was speaking ahead of United’s first ever ‘Malta Day’ which will see award-winning chefs and staff from the Fortina showcasing the island’s food, wine and other local produce in Bramall Lane’s restaurants before this evening’s key League One fixture with Alan Knill’s Scunthorpe.
