CRISIS? What crisis?
A controversial first-half strike from Chris O’Grady ensured Sheffield Wednesday claimed the local bragging rights against Barnsley and moved them off the bottom of the table following Peterborough United’s stunning 2-1 win at table-topping Cardiff City earlier on in the day.
Empty Red Plastic seats posted on thestar.co.uk: “I’m happy we picked up three points. Lots of games like this are dire. The team fought hard and defended well. I was proud of the fight and spirit the team showed. This is what we need if we are to get out of this mess.
“We all need to back the team and stick together.”
But some Wednesday fans think it is far too early to say they have turned the corner and reckon their triumph at Oakwell has just papered over the cracks.
Wise owl said: “We were second best to a poor Barnsley side. I have been watching Wednesday since 1954 and this is one of the weakest sides I have seen.
“I want Dave Jones to stay and turn it around but I have to say I’m not convinced he can do it. He doesn’t come across as very enthusiastic at all.”
M1ccowl echoed those sentiments saying: “This was an awful game and Wednesday were lucky to be playing another poor side. Three points gladly taken but Wednesday now playing Gary Megson’s players and tactics but without the drive and purpose demanded by him.
“Twelve players brought in by Jones and only two or three at best now considered in the starting eleven. No matter what Dave Jones past record may be, THIS IS NOT GOOD MANAGEMENT.”
Meanwhile, clear-cut opportunities were at a premium in Sheffield United’s goalless draw with league leaders Tranmere Rovers. Blades supporters felt they sorely missed Kevin McDonald’s presence in midfield. The Scot is currently injured.
Sean56 said: “How we missed Mcdonald today; virtually no service to the forwards. A draw was a fair result in a poor game. Time to drop Marcus Williams; he’s totally ineffective.”
Ratho1 added: “Lets face it, when McDonald doesn’t play, we struggle to score. We have a solid backline, a useful set of forwards but they can do nothing without being supplied from the midfield.
“Danny Wilson needs to find another midfield gem and quick or we will be watching a lot of sterile goalless draws for the rest of the season.”
