Ched Evans

CHED Evans has silenced the critics following his goal-scoring exploits on the pitch and is the talk of Bramall Lane.

The Sheffield United striker took his tally to eight goals in 14 appearances with a predatory close range strike against Carlisle United.

He is in a rich vein of form, having notched four goals in his last four outings, and has established himself as an indispensable member of United’s promotion tilt.

Given old boy James Beattie is back training at the club and is set to be offered a short-term deal as long as he proves his fitness, Evans and his striking colleagues are fully aware they have to keep delivering to stay in the team.

Of Evans’ red hot form in front of goal, his team-mate Richard Cresswell said: “Ched is still a relatively young lad. Everyone knows what he can do it is just getting it out of him on a regular basis.

“As long as he does that, the only way is up for him.”

Boss Danny Wilson has paired Welsh international Evans with the vastly-experienced Cresswell for the last two matches.

Wilson praised the duo’s work ethic following a comprehensive 3-0 victory over Oxford United in the first round of the FA Cup.

“When Ched and I have played together the last couple of years, we have done well,” said Bridlington-born Cresswell. “Hopefully if we do well we can get a run together.”

Wilson added: “Ched is more consistent this year.

“I can’t comment on what happened last year but he is enjoying his football. When you put your arm around people and you get people believing in you it gives you that little spring in your step and he has certainly got that at the moment.”

Meanwhile, Blackpool chief Ian Holloway has paid tribute to United for restoring Matt Phillips’ confidence.

The 20-year-old hit six goals in as many starts in a productive stint at United before returning to Bloomfield Road following the expiry of his one-month loan deal.

It was the 20-year-old who create Jonjo Shelvey’s equaliser at Middlesbrough last weekend.

“I am thankful to Sheffield United,” said Holloway. “They played him six or seven times and he is absolutely buzzing.”

I think respect is due to Ched for the way he is playing. He was under a huge amount of pressure since day-one at United. And now with the pending court case - innocent or guilty - he could have just hid himself away. Instead, his confidence is up and he's scoring goals.

5 million in transfer fees and wages etc for a player who can cut it in the third division. Yeah. Brilliant signing.

The 2 players on loan from Blackpool have shown the difference between the championship and div 1 in terms of scoring goals and I'm sure they are not earning what Ched is between them.

All Ched has done is proven that he is a great League 1 player, the people who he has silenced are the people that said he would not be good at this level.

@1 He could be off in a transfer. We will have to wait and see about his court case, the rumour is that this girl has cried wolf before too. Isn't it innocent until proven guilty and given the evidence we cannot assume he did do anything wrong with any conviction. If he is convicted then fair enough, but if he isn't it's not nice to have your name dragged through the dirt for something you didn't commit. Have a bit of decency and wait until it's over before convicting him of anything...
