Quickfire Ched on the comeback trail

SHEFFIELD United forward Ched Evans has revealed he hopes to return to first-team training next week.

It was initially feared the Welsh international had broken his collarbone after a collision with Peterborough goalkeeper Joe Lewis in the club's 1-0 defeat at London Road seven days ago.

But Evans, signed in a 3 million deal from Manchester City last summer, is progressing well on the verge of a remarkable comeback.

His return would be a major fitness fillip for United boss Kevin Blackwell, whose side entertain play-off rivals Blackpool at Bramall Lane tonight.

Evans told The Star: "I've been to the surgeon and they said four to six weeks but I am feeling good so hopefully it will be sooner than that.

"I'm ahead of schedule; my target is to come back next week. I always heal fast so now I just want to finish the season on a high."

Blackwell's troops are seeking to stretch their unbeaten home run to 11 matches and reignite their faltering play-off push following a run of just one win from five games.

"It is a big game but our home record is phenomenal," said Evans. "I'm confident that we will go out and win and show how good we are.

"This is our chance to turn results around. Everybody has a couple of bad results. Hopefully we have had our sticky patch."

With Chris Morgan banned and Kyle Bartley a serious doubt due to illness, Blackwell has a defensive selection poser.

Richard Cresswell will continue to lead United's attack in Evans' absence.
