Why three left backs? That is the question many Sheffield United supporters were asking when Nigel Clough named Simon Lappin, Matt Hill and Aidy White in his starting 11 earlier this month.
“I’ve always said I preferred to play in midfield,” Lappin, who has been duly deployed in a more advanced role by United’s manager, told the Green‘Un. “It’s only in the last few years that I’ve actually been pigeon-holed as a left-back.
“To be truthful, I actually played as a winger or a striker when I first got involved with football. Well, that was until I lost my pace!
“Joking aside, though, in the middle is probably where I feel most comfortable. But, the problem is, people always want to see to regard you as one thing or another whereas, in reality, it’s not always that simple.”
