Nigel Adkins, the Sheffield United manager, is already looking forward to a “mouthwatering” showdown against former club Scunthorpe United on the final day of the 2015/16 season.

United host Iron, who Adkins twice led to promotion, at Bramall Lane on Sunday, May 8 - a game that the new Blades boss admits could be about more than sentiment.

“From our point of view, we travel to Gillingham on the opening day of the season and at least, for the fans, it’s on a Saturday rather than midweek,” Adkins said.

“That’s obviously the first fixture you look for when they are released. Then we look at Christmas, when we face two of my former clubs in Scunthorpe [December 19] and Wigan Athletic [Boxing Day].

“They are two good clubs, and ones I expect to be challenging at the top end of the table, with ourselves, come the end of the season.

“Then you, of course, look towards the end of the season which is an interesting one for me, with my connections there.

“But Scunthorpe could be right up there by then; they have a good manager in Mark Robins, they’ve signed some good players like Jack King and Scott Laird and a solid chairman who will back Mark with funds in the future.

“They also have exciting times ahead with their new ground on the horizon. But Sheffield United is a fantastic club, too, and I’m delighted to be here. What we have to do now is make sure we get everything in place to try and ensure a positive start.”
