Morgan set for return
CHRIS Morgan, the Sheffield United captain, is bidding to make a quick comeback from his calf injury.
The experienced centre-back sustained the knock in training a week ago and, as a precautionary measure, was left out of the club's 1-0 victory over Preston last weekend.
Morgan watched from the stands as debutant Jean Calve unleashed a spectacular long range effort to secure Gary Speed's first managerial win of his career at Bramall Lane.
Although disappointed to be ruled out of the Preston clash, Morgan expects to be in contention for the trip to Derby after the international break.
"I just got a pain in my calf while training," he told The Star last night. "I went for a scan and I found out that I had damaged a few fibres in my calf.
"I think if I had done it on the Monday I would have been alright for the weekend but it wasn't worth making it worse especially with the international break coming up."
No player enjoys spending time in the treatment room, and, having seen the United physio, Morgan is confident his spell on the sidelines will be brief and that he will be able to resume first-team training early next week.
"The gaffer pulled me in on Friday and said that there was no point aggravating it and making the injury worse," said Morgan. "It is disappointing any time you pick up an injury. But I would have been more annoyed had I tried pushing it and that had ruled me out for four to five weeks.
"I'm just going to rest it now and hopefully I will be back in training either on Monday or Tuesday."
United climbed out of the relegation zone and off the bottom of the table after their hard-fought win against Darren Ferguson's side.
Now Morgan is calling on the squad to keep the momentum going when they travel to Pride Park to face the Rams, who let a two-goal lead slip against Neil Warnock's QPR outfit on Saturday.
Barnsley-born defender Morgan said: "We needed that first win and it was great to get it at home in Gary's first match in charge.
"The fans showed their appreciation for Gary at the start and I think it is clear that they are very happy with the board's choice.
"Gary is still wanting to implement a couple of things so the break gives us a couple of weeks training to work on them. It is all about consistency in this division and hopefully we can stick a few results back to back together and start climbing up the league."
Meanwhile, Premier League new boys Blackpool are close to signing former Blades winger David Carney from FC Twente.
It is thought the Tangerines agreed a deal to sign the Australian winger just before the transfer deadline closed on Tuesday night.
Subject to Premier League approval, Carney will join Blackpool initially on a one-year contract, with the option of a further year.
