IF Danny Wilson intends on pursuing his interest in Leeds United striker Billy Paynter, then the Sheffield United manager could find the possibility of a swap deal being suggested.
Leeds United’s interest in Nick Montgomery could be rekindled if the Blades make an approach.
The Bramall Lane midfielder was linked with The Championship club after relegation struck the Sheffield club in May.
So if Wilson followed up recent speculation with an additional inquiry for Paynter then Leeds could make a reciprocal nod in the direction of Montgomery, thus raising the notion of an exchange.
Such a deal would require, it is suspected, considerable negotiation.
Wilson, though charged with lowering the wages bill, would hardly be keen to ship out Montgomery as he seeks a swift return to The Championship.
Meanwhile, Leeds boss Simon Grayson answered the recent speculation linking United with Paynter by saying he isn’t looking to lose the former Swindon man despite him having a difficult time last season.
Both clubs will be keeping an eye on the respective situations.
Wilson, who made Swindon left-side defender Jean Francois Lescinel his first signing this week, may require other departures before pursuing Paynter.
He is set for talks with several players shortly.
