Mcindoe the best - walker

SHEFFIELD United will be signing a midfielder of the highest calibre if they broker a deal for Bristol City's Michael McIndoe.

That is the view of Mickey Walker, Doncaster Rovers' director of football, after it emerged that the former Scotland A international has been granted permission to discuss a move to Bramall Lane.

Walker was responsible for bringing McIndoe to South Yorkshire in 2003 when - together with the then manager of Rovers, Dave Penney, he prised the 29-year-old away from Yeovil for just 50,000.

McIndoe's value has grown considerably since then following spells at Barnsley and Wolves.

And, according to Walker, United have targeted a player capable of unlocking even the most miserly of Championship defences.

"Macca is a consummate professional," Walker told The Star. "He looks after himself, keeps in shape and is very dedicated to the job.

"His attitude is first class and you really couldn't ask for better in that department.

"But, even more importantly, he's exceptionally talented.

"Macca likes to have a real go at people, get the ball down on the floor and attack.

"Really, he's very, very good and it doesn't surprise me that people are always looking at him."

Having finished a creditable 14th last season, Rovers face United on October 3 at Bramall Lane before hosting the return at the Keepmoat Stadium five months later.

Walker added: "I love Macca to bits, he's a top lad and I wish him all the best with whatever he does.

"Apart from, that is, in the two games against us because we want to take six points from those."

United returned to pre-season training at Shirecliffe yesterday.

They travel to Malta - where they will meet Floriana in a friendly - on Tuesday before returning to England at the weekend.

John-Joe O'Toole, who finished last term on loan at United, is set to complete a permanent move after Watford, having already sanctioned Tommy Smith's move to Bramall Lane, also agreed a fee for the youngster's services.

Together with McIndoe, they will hold further talks with Blackwell over the weekend while Fulham winger Julian Gray has joined fellow trialist Glen Little in South Yorkshire.

Goalkeeper Ian Bennett has signed a one year contract.
