Febian Brandy’s first-half goal ensured Sheffield United preserved their unbeaten record during pre-season by beating Mansfield Town.

Brandy, who joined David Weir’s side earlier this summer, pounced after only three minutes of what was to prove a robust contest against opponents promoted from the Conference last term.

Kevin McDonald and Jamie Murphy also impressed, with the later going close on several occasions as United threatened to overwhelm Town before the interval.

However the hosts improved in stature as the afternoon wore on with United’s George Long, returning to action after being selected in the England squad which appeared at this summer’s FIFA under-20 World Cup, denying Amari Morgan-Smith during the closing stages.

Lyle Taylor made his debut for the visitors as a second-half substitute.

United, who face Alfreton in an under-21 fixture on Monday, resume their preparations for next month’s League One opener when Greek Superleague outfit Atromitos FC appear at Bramall Lane on Friday night.
