It’s Blades not bucks for Beats

JAMES Beattie turned down a series of money-spinning offers to stay with Sheffield United, manager Danny Wilson revealed last night.

Beattie, the former England striker, yesterday extended his contract at Bramall Lane until the end of the season after the short-term deal he initially agreed in November expired.

Despite Beattie being hit with a three-match ban following his red card at Charlton last weekend, Wilson confirmed United were not the only team wanting him.

“James could have earned a lot of money by going elsewhere,” Wilson said. “But money isn’t the issue for him.

“There were clubs abroad in for him. James knows the financial situation here but he’s staying because he wants to play and he wants to play for Sheffield United. He’s here for the right reasons and that’s music to my ears.”

Beattie’s suspension begins when United entertain Birmingham City in the FA Cup fourth round tomorrow. The 33-year-old scored 34 goals in 65 appearances for United earlier in his career.

“I didn’t have to pitch Sheffield United to James,” added Wilson. “He knows this club better than I do.

“He’s probably operating at 50 to 70 per cent fitness wise right now but if I didn’t think he can make an impact on the pitch he wouldn’t be here.”

@58... No problem Banter... after Milan paid off all the debts (and then paid of the termination of contracts when he took over) we are now living within our means, the first year highlighted some of these one of termination costs with a loss but they are done with now. We are probably incurring slight losses yeah but no daft purchases or wages that the club cannot handle and for me thats fine as when the new rules come into force about percentage of income on wages you lot are TOTALLY screwed. @Manorblade.... Yes you have a strong squad but you are paying way way over the top in wages, its unsustainable your own chairman tells you you are loosing 250k Per Week !!!. Yes we need a few more players but for me I would rather stay where we are than buy in players that need the chairman's input to fund the purchase and the wages. Last thing we want is to owe our Chairman 60 mill..,. I appreciate that you may need to adopt that strategy if you are chasing Silverware and after all its proved so successful for the Blades in the last 12 years as if it wasn't for the investment from Lord Lucan you would not in all probability have won the Malta Cup !!!

The only reason there's no mass exodus is. No one wants them. If the alleged rapist was not due in court MacSue would have got rid

Why do the porkers keep banging on about our debt ,are they upset that there has been no mass exodus of players and milan is not interested in making any major signings.Getting BT until the end of the season is all we need to have a great chance of promotion our squad is strong enough the pigs by their own admission are still short of a replacement for marshal . seems like our chairman has a little more faith in his manager and team than yours.
