Injured Evans set for pre-season all-clear

Ched Evans

Ched Evans

STRIKER Ched Evans has been ruled out of Sheffield United’s final Championship fixture at Swansea City - but the Welsh international is expected to be fit in time for pre-season.

Evans, the club’s top scorer with nine goals, was taken to hospital after damaging his ankle in the 2-2 draw against Barnsley at the weekend.

United’s medical team initially feared the 22-year-old faced a lengthy spell on the sidelines. It was thought he had broken his ankle following an accidental collision with Barnsley captain Jason Shackell.

But a series of tests have confirmed Evans, who had missed the previous three matches due to a knee injury, has not suffered a break.

Manager Micky Adams told The Star: “He went to the hospital on Saturday and got it checked out. From his point of view, it is good news and it is not as bad as first thought.

“The quicker he can get moving on it the better.”

As one of the high earners at Bramall Lane, Evans is likely to head the list of senior players United will look to offload following relegation to League One.

Adams, who has overseen four victories from his 23 matches in charges, accepts he will have to slash the wage bill to balance the books at his boyhood club.

“Certain players will be leaving the football club,” said Adams, who is likely to stay at the helm. “In our position, you have to listen to any sensible offers for any player but We don’t want to sell young players.”

Meanwhile, Ian Mill, who successfully won compensation for United after the Carlos Tevez saga, is spearheading Queen’s Park Rangers defence over the signing of Alejandro Faurlin.

The hearing, which started yesterday, centres around seven charges relating to the initial deal arising from the Argentine midfielder’s ownership. If found guilty, the R’s could be deducted points.

Everyone keeps talking about cutting this £12m wage bill but I actually don't think it will be as painful as has been made out. Even if the wage bill was reduced by over 12 to £5m that should still give us a good squad for League One. Simonsen will get picked up as 3rd choice keeper in the Prem, Kozluk will be released, Calve, Nosworthy and Wright have gone already, Perrino, Lowry and Mattock go back to their clubs leaving a defence of AksaluLong, Lowton, Taylor, Morgan, Ertl, Collins and McGuire. France is released, Yeates will probably leave for a small fee, Riise goes back to Fulham leaving a midfield of McAllister, Monty, Doyle, Williamson, Quinn, Harriott and Philliskirk. Henderson has a number of clubs after him and, as the highest wage earner in the club will go, Ward and Evans will leave for fees, Bent has gone, Bogdanovic had offers in January (but his wage is paid by Malta anyway) leaving Cresswell (probably too old to leave), Tonne and Slew up front. By my reckoning that is a wage bill of just under £5m. To this we would need to add a striker, wide player, left back and possibly an experienced keeper (with Aksalu or Long going out on loan). If we could get Doyle, Collins and Cresswell out as well that would pay for these additions. If not then, unfortunately, we would probably have to sell Quinn or Monty to get a fee and room on the wage bill for these players. Overall though I can't say I would miss many of the players that would be leaving other than probably Henderson but he would have been gone by now anyway if he hadn't got injured last pre-season.

Ched Evans has played his last game for the Blades. Ultimately, a massive mistake that probably cost Blackwell his job. At a time when we were cost cutting to spend nearly £2m plus high wages on him has proven to be a major error, his lack of goals were bad enough but we also sold Sharp to make way for him. As with Blackwell's other key signings, Howard, Cotterill, Henderson, Nosworthy, Harper, Britton, Cresswell, Taylor, Williamson - all have failed and ended up costing Utd a small fortune in fees andor wages. I think there is only Ward that could count as a success and even his progress was hampered by injuries.

Monty and Henderson for Leeds ( to be released, no fee). Evans for Norwich - £500,000. Lowton for Newcastle - £650,000. (That one really show our determination to keep our young players.....)Only player coming in so far in Tommy Miller (out of contract)......

He's had his X-ray and as suspected there's no footballer in there.
