HIGH FIVE: Sheffield United 1 Reading 0

KEVIN BLACKWELL showered praise on his players after watching them move into the automatic promotion places following last night's 1-0 victory at Reading.

Brian Howard's second-half strike saw Sheffield United climb to second although their stay in the top two will be shortlived unless Charlton Athletic beat Birmingham City later today.

"I've not got words to describe them," said the United manager after his side's fifth successive win.

"They showed every characteristic you could ever want.

"Really, words can't describe them and we know that was a massive three points.

"But we don't want to send any messages out. We just want to go up. That's what I want, that's what the lads want and it's what the fans want."

Chants of "The Blades are going up" echoed around the Madejski Stadium following the final whistle but victory came at a price.

Howard will miss two of United's remaining four games, against Swansea and Burnley, after collecting his 10th caution of the season.

Northern Ireland striker Jamie Ward is now a major doubt for Monday's visit of Nottingham Forest after being carried from the pitch on a stretcher.

Sounding a note of caution - "It's just one step along what has been a very long road though" - Blackwell added: "Jamie put in a block tackle and it might have opened up his ankle joint.

"The medical staff will have a look at it but, I've got to say, Dennis Pettit and his staff in the physio department have been superb all year."

Blackwell's celebrations, however, were tinged with sadness after his pet dog Chester was diagnosed with cancer.

"I'll be going to watch Forest on Saturday because we play them next," he said. "And then I'll be going to see my dog.

"He's my best mate and it puts a lot of things into perspective."
