Harry backed for England job

FORMER Sheffield United manager Neil Warnock has backed Harry Redknapp to be the next England manager following Fabio Capello’s dramatic resignation.

Capello stepped down following a meeting with Football Association chiefs at Wembley Stadium days after he criticised their decision to strip John Terry of the captaincy.

Tottenham boss Redknapp was cleared of tax evasion charges earlier yesterday.

Warnock, who has recently been axed by Queens Park Rangers, said: “We have to go and get Harry Redknapp. There’s only one England game before the end of the season and Daniel Levy knows how much it would mean to Harry. It’s the pinnacle of his career. He is the only man for the job.”

Ex-Blades right-back Kyle Walker said on Twitter: “Gutted to see Fabio Capello go, he put a lot of trust in me and gave me my first cap. just want to say a big thanks really.”

FA chairman David Bernstein and the Club England management team will hold a media conference at Wembley at 12 noon today. Former Sheffield Wednesday chairman Sir Dave Richards, a member of the FA, is expected to play a key role in appointing Capello’s successor.

The shock resignation brings an end to Capello’s four years in charge of England - he had been due to step down after the European Championship and leaves the FA needing to appoint a replacement as soon as possible.

The next international is later this month, a friendly against Holland on February 29 at Wembley and Stuart Pearce, manager of England Under-21s and the Great Britain Olympic team, is expected to be put in charge of that fixture.
