SHEFFIELD United and Exeter were involved in an incredible game with eight goals shared and United two down leading 3-2 and 4-3.

A terrible mix-up between Long and Williams turned the match on its head and gifted the visitors with a 10th minute opener.

A hopeful through ball should have presented little problem for either to deal with but, with both dithering rather than taking decisive action, former Barnsley forward NARDIELLO was presented with a simple tap-in instead.

NOBLE made no mistake though from long-range in the 23rd minute when he left Long rooted to the spot following some great work by Golbourne.

PHILLIPS pulled one goal back with a deflected shot - apparently off Archibald-Henville - in the 44th minute.#

he equalising goal, in the 65th minute, was slicker than Exeter manager Paul Tisdale’s suit.

Montgomery spread a raking pass out wide to the flank and CLARKE, anticipating Williams’ centre, was on hand to slot home first time. The whole dynamics of the game changed following that intervention and, in the 70th minute, LOWTON edged United in front.Quinn crossed, Maguire helped the ball on and the full-back was on hand to bundle it home.

In the 82nd minute, Exeter dragged themselves back on level terms. A long clearance fell kindly for Nardiello and as United waited for an offside flag to be raised O’FLYNN hit the target.

No matter as, almost immediately after the re-start, PHILLIPS pounced from close range when Evans and Maguire combined. The drama continued with DUNNE slotting home past Long from a tight angle. Again, straight from kick-off United pressed for a winner in stoppage time. but to no avail.

Blackpool manager Ian Holloway’s has suggested that on-loan duo Phillips and Clarke are almost certain to return to Bloomfield Road when their short-term deals expire. “United have got two hopes,” Holloway had responded when asked about their chances of signing both men permanently. “And one of them is Bob.”
