danny Wilson’s Sheffield United produced a champagne-like performance.

United, so wasteful against their Yorkshire rivals, showed Colchester no such generosity and took the lead after barely four minutes.

Williams, preferred to Jean-Francois at left-back, whipped in a corner which was only half cleared and when Porter helped on McDonald’s chip into the area, EVANS was on hand to score his second of the campaign.

Ten minutes later, PORTER went from provider to poacher with a perfectly executed finish over goalkeeper Cousins after latching onto Maguire’s long ball forward.

Only the width of the crossbar prevented Evans from making it three in the 30th minute while Simonsen, whose performance against Town had come under intense scrutiny, did well to foil Wordsworth and Bond soon after.

All in all, pretty much the perfect first-half.

United had played some delightful stuff before the interval.

Colchester, though, started the second period in much more positive fashion.

Porter put the ball in the back of the net just before the hour but an offside flag had been raised.

Evans oozed confidence and, shimming one way and the next; he created enough time and space to shoot but skewed wide.

Indeed, as the half progressed, it seemed complacency, not Colchester, was United’s biggest enemy. Lowton, with Porter unmarked alongside him, hit the bar with a clipped attempt in the 70th minute. But QUINN made no mistake by curling home a clinical 72nd minute finish after yet more good work from Evans.

Evans left the pitch to a standing ovation as Cresswell entered the fray in the 74th minute.
