They knocked on the door throughout the night but did not get the answer they were looking for as the Blades were held to a draw by fellow play-off chasers Notts County at Bramall Lane.
Mike Edwards gave the visitors the lead before half time only for Jamie Murphy to equalise with 14 minutes to go after an intense period of United pressure.
The result saw both sides maintain their fifth and sixth billing in League One.
It was a Blades outfit who lined up without new loan signing Chris O’Grady who joined from Brighton on Thursday.
Nigel Clough had warned that O’Grady was carrying a ‘slight knock,’ apparently one so serious as to keep him out of the matchday squad.
United started the brighter and threatened first when a shot from outside the box was deflected wide by Jamie Murphy.
County soon looked to test Mark Howard but Michael Petrasso’s effort was tame after Liam Noble robbed possession in midfield.
Jay McEveley got on the end of a corner kick but sent a soft header for Roy Carroll to claim.
Howard had to be more alert to deny Jones after a mazy run. His first strike was parried but Howard reacted quickly to claim at the second attempt.
Edwards met Gary Jones’ corner at the back post on the half hour mark to put Shaun Derry’s side the lead on his return to S2.
Jose Baxter fired wide following up a free kick from McEveley which hit the wall.
After the break Michael Higdon had an excellent chance to equalise but was crowded out well by Mike Edwards as he looked to pounce on a cross.
Murphy broke the County line but fired a tame effort straight at Carroll.
But after a second half of strong pressure, United finally drew level 14 minutes from the break.
Bob Harris provided the cross and Murphy stalked in to nod in.
