Sheffield United booked their place in the fourth round of Capital One Cup third after a 1-0 win over Leyton Orient at the Matchroom Stadium.
Michael Higdon’s header after just two minutes from a cross by Jamie Murphy put the Blades in front as Nigel Clough’s men aimed to bounce back from their 5-2 defeat to Swindon Town on Saturday.
After that, the game became a lot tighter and although United were on the front foot, they didn’t produce anything to trouble Gary Woods in the Orient goal.
After the break it was a similar story with very little in the way of goalmouth action.
That was until the 65th minute when Orient’s Elliot Omozusi struck the post after his 25 yard effort had taken a deflection along the way.
A minute later Ryan Flynn was just wide with his shot from outside the box.
As the game edged towards the end the Blades shut up shop and didn’t allow Orient any space to manufacture an opportunity to grab an equaliser.
Defensively, this was the type of performance that fans are more used to seeing, in contrast to Saturday’s backline display.
