Dominic Calvert-Lewin is being primed by Gareth Southgate for a place in the squad for Tuesday's friendly against Brazil at Wembley as the international boss sticks by a pledge to place his faith in youth.

Southgate has overlooked some experienced strikers who have been lacking game time for their clubs so far this season and has hinted at a call-up for Calvert-Lewin who is playing regularly for Everton.

England have been struck by injuries to a number of key players in the build-up to the double header with Germany and Brazil and Tammy Abraham, Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Jordan Pickford will all play on Friday night.

Calvert-Lewin is expected to be joined by in the squad for Tuesday's match against the Brazilians at Wembley by fellow under 21 starts Demarai Gray and Dominic Solanke.

Sheffield-born Calvert-Lewin who joined Everton from Sheffield United at the beginning of last season for a fee of around £1.5 million scored in the U20 World Cup final which England won during the summer and has five goals in all competitions for a struggling Toffees side this season so far.

Despite injury to, among others, Harry Kane and Dele Alli, Southgate decided against calling up the likes of Daniel Sturridge, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Jermain Defoe and has instead chosen to give young players an opportunity.

“For Defoe and Sturridge to come in and impress us in these games, that really is a big jump given the minimal amount of playing time they have had,” said Southgate. “It doesn’t mean either of them are ruled out going forward.

“They are both top goalscorers. But we’ve got some exciting young strikers playing with the under-21s – Solanke, Calvert-Lewin and Gray – and if we think we need cover we might look to call those players up [for the Brazil match].”

Calvert-Lewin's expected call-up comes after another Sheffield United Academy graduate, Harry Maguire, made his England debut a month ago against Lithuania. Yet another, Kyle Walker, is already a regular.
