Fergie's side short on confidence

DARREN Ferguson admits his side enter this evening's match with Sheffield United short of confidence.

Goals from former Bramall Lane winger David Cotterill and Ashley Williams condemned Preston North End to defeat at Swansea on Saturday prompting the manager to concede: "It wasn't the best afternoon.

"Swansea is always a difficult place to play at, they are a good footballing team, we knew that before we went.

"But we simply didn't keep the ball well enough, we didn't come out as a back four, we kept giving possession back to Swansea.

"It became more difficult for us.

"I can't fault the lads in terms of their effort and commitment, but Swansea are a confident team at the moment.

"Confidence is a massive thing in football, confidence and self-belief."

Ferguson's assessment of Preston's problems mirrors the one offered by his opposite number Kevin Blackwell following United's 1-1 draw with Derby County at the weekend.

And like Blackwell, the Scot is poised to enter the loan market in an effort to tackle the problem with Matt James, the Manchester United youngster, poised to follow striker Danny Welbeck from Old Trafford.

James trained with his new team mates at Preston's Springfields complex yesterday afternoon and will officially put pen to paper on a 93 day emergency deal before tonight's fixture.
