Danny backs Fabio decision to quit

DANNY Wilson has expressed sympathy with Fabio Capello’s predicament following the Italian’s resignation as England manager.

Capello told a television station in his homeland that he felt “insulted” by the Football Association’s decision that John Terry would be stripped of the international captaincy before facing trial over charge of racial abuse.

FA chiefs last night confirmed they would “prefer” a home-grown candidate to lead England through this summer’s European Championships.

Wilson said: “I think it (removing the armband from Terry) is a decision for the manager to make.

“Whether or not it is the right thing for him (Terry) to be captain is a completely different argument but it should have been for Fabio to decide.

“The whole situation should have been handled differently. If people are of different opinions then they should sit down behind closed doors and talk them through.

“What’s wrong is for this to have been conducted through the newspapers.”

Wilson joined Sir Alex Ferguson and Roberto Martinez in suggesting Capello had been undermined when the matter was raised during yesterday’s weekly press conference at Shirecliffe.

The ex-AC Milan, Roma and Real Madrid coach stepped down on Wednesday despite leading England to the 2012 finals in Poland and Ukraine.

Wilson added: “If you listen to popular opinion then everyone is saying it’s the best thing that could happen.

“But I prefer to listen to the players and they’ve all spoken of their respect for Capello.”
