Blades: My best ever job, says Sheffield United boss Danny Wilson

DANNY Wilson has described managing Sheffield United as the “biggest” and “best” challenge of his managerial career.

The former Northern Ireland international, who has also enjoyed spells in charge of South Yorkshire rivals Barnsley and Sheffield Wednesday, was speaking after the club’s supporters publicly welcomed him into the Bramall Lane fold for the first time by chanting his name during last weekend’s visit to Charlton Athletic.

Wilson said: “Of course it’s nice to hear but ultimately that (reception) is down to the players. As far as this job is concerned it’s not only the biggest challenge I’ve had but also the best.”

Wilson’s appointment provoked a storm of protest when it was first announced in May. Some fans already disillusioned by United’s relegation from the Championship unfurled a banner reading ’Love United, Hate Wilson’ outside the stadium.

Since then, the 52-year-old has steered United to third in the League One table and into the fourth round of the FA Cup where they entertain Birmingham City today. Wilson, dismissed suggestions that United’s lack of spending power could prove a barrier to further progress.

“I’ve always worked on a shoestring so it’s not all about money,” he said. “Money helps - because the best costs - but if we’d had £20 million in the summer then a lot of the lads who are doing so well might have gone and how bad would that have been?”

Post 32 no they didn't and the crowd was 17,916 plus it cost more to watch the owls game than the massive v Birmingham!! It's fair to say that your fund club is a better draw than Birmingham but we DIDN'T get hammered 4-0

Re: Posts 24 and 26. United's FA Cup gate of over 18,000 is perhaps not the best point on which to pick an argument, given that there were just 17,000 at Hillsborough for the arguably more attractive visit of West Ham, who also brought a larger away following than Birmingham.

a work mate of mine, went to a night with john sheridan event at the start of the season..the obvious question was, 'what ya think of wilson at the pigs?'..sheridan replied.'he's the best manager in this division by far.and united are lucky to have him.the fans that are against his appointment will soon be eating their words. the guy is a true gentleman'...then he was asked 'how can an owl become a pig manager?'..the reply..'just like barnsley and all his other clubs.he was employed by them. he supported wigan and liverpool. mark my words,i know you won't like the answer.but imo he will be a success at sheff united' HE'S DANNY WILSON.AND AT THE MOMENT A BLADE!!!!!!
