Blades eye Beattie boost ahead of Addicks clash
Popular figure: Blades striker James Beattie
SHEFFIELD United hope to extend James Beattie’s stay at Bramall Lane until the end of the season before their League One showdown at Charlton Athletic.
The former England striker, who signed a short-term contract with Danny Wilson’s side in November, is scheduled to meet members of the South Yorkshire club’s board in London today before finalising his preparations for tomorrow’s top-of-the-table clash.
United, who could also be poised to receive an approach from Derek Riorden’s representatives investigating whether they are interested in capturing the one-time Celtic marksman, are keen on retaining Beattie’s services providing a suitable agreement can be reached.
Wilson said: “We’ll be talking with James. I won’t personally be sitting down with him, but he’ll be having talks.
“Having James here has kept the other strikers on their toes and his experience has been invaluable in the dressing room. He fitted in straight away with the rest of the lads because he knows most of them anyway.”
Second-placed United will move to within a point of leaders Charlton if they win at The Valley.
Wilson, who yesterday insisted no bids have been received for key players such as Stephen Quinn and Nick Montgomery, added: “James isn’t the only one who has been brilliant in the dressing room. Monty will be as frustrated as hell that he’s not starting, but the support he’s given behind the scenes has been fantastic.”
Wilson, who admitted it will be “difficult” to capture John Fleck, before learning that the Glasgow Rangers youngster had joined Blackpool instead.
United also said that Mihkel Aksalu had left the club by mutual consent.
Riorden reportedly views United as a potential destination after leaving Chinese club Shaanxi Chan-Ba.

Friday, January 20, 2012 at 01:56 PMHe'll be on pay-per-play terms so I'm not too worried that he hasn't had much match time. If he comes good he'll get game time and score. If he doesn't, we don't lose anything... In the meantime we have a back-up plan for Ched (who still has an uncertain future, let's face it) and if we can also bring in Clarke, who is a completely different style of player, we'll have a very strong front-line and just as strong a bench...

Friday, January 20, 2012 at 12:40 PMCant see him playing a full 90 minutes Donny when Evans and Cressy are linking up so well ....If hes happy with coming on for the last 10 minutes and getting fitter every week that way then sign him up and if Ched or Cressy go down injured later on in the season BT will be a fantastic replacement ...UTB

Friday, January 20, 2012 at 10:21 AMWould be nice to actually see Beattie play a full 90mins! I dont no how they can make a decision on signing him up without it! If hes not good enough to start week in week out theres no point bringing him in
