Blades boss has options as he prepares for fixture congestion

SHEFFIELD United manager Danny Wilson last night insisted that failing to strengthen his squad during the January transfer window would have had an adverse effect upon the club’s season.

Expressing fears that Bramall Lane could be facing a fixture pile-up if adverse weather continues to bite, Wilson, speaking before learning that today’s League One fixture at Colchester had been postponed, said: “We might well be looking at a situation where we’ve got blocks of games piling up and we have to be prepared for that. We needed options and thankfully that’s what we’ve got.

“We had to make sure the squad can perform at its best if they are playing Saturday - Tuesday - Saturday - Tuesday over a period of time.”

United, who captured Will Hoskins on loan before last week’s deadline for new signings, also added Marcus Williams and James Beattie to Wilson’s roster as they prepare to enter the most critical period of the season so far.

With Scunthorpe’s visit to South Yorkshire re-arranged for later this month, fourth-placed United are scheduled to face fellow high-flyers Huddersfield Town and Sheffield United before entertaining Alan Knill’s side.

They must also re-arrange their forthcoming meeting with JP Trophy finalists Chesterfield.
