SHEFFIELD United could have striker Billy Paynter on their radar.

SHEFFIELD United could have striker Billy Paynter on their radar.

The front man had a successful time working with Blades boss Danny Wilson when they were at Swindon two seasons ago, a campaign that ended with the agony of a play-off defeat at Wembley.

Paynter’s success that 2009/10 season - which included 26 goals in League One and 29 overall - led to Leeds United moving in to snap him up.

However, he hasn’t been able to make the expected impact and played in only half of Leeds’ games, managing just a single goal. He was sent off at Bramall Lane late on in the Blades’ 2-0 win in March.

If there is any prospect of Paynter not being considered for a regular start, then Wilson could be alerted to the possibility of trying to bring him to the Lane.

Wilson has been linked with another of his former players, Jon-Paul McGovern whilst speculation continues over Ched Evans’s future but Middlesbrough have ended their interest.

The Blades could end up in a city derby when the first round of the Carling Cup is drawn today.

That’s because United are one of the 17 seeded teams in the Northern Section whereas Wednesday are one of the 17 unseeded teams.

United have now finalised their pre-season fixture list.

They start at Sheffield FC on July 9 and Worksop Town on July 12 before going to Malta where they face Sliema Wanderers on July 18 and Hibernians two days later.

Back at the Lane they play Doncaster Rovers on Tuesday, July 26 and Blackpool on Sunday, July 31 (3pm).They also send sides to Alfreton Town on July 27 and Stocksbridge on August 2.
