Sheffield United’s unlikely push for the play-offs is over, after a 0-0 stalemate at Tranmere Rovers this afternoon.

The point saw United climb to eighth in the League One table, but sixth-placed Peterborough’s 4-1 win over Carlisle means they cannot be overhauled by Nigel Clough’s side.

United, who made five changes for the trip to Merseyside, were indebted to Mark Howard after the goalkeeper produced a smart save to prevent them falling behind early on.

But chances at either end were few and far between, with 18-year-old Connor Dimaio - recalled to the starting eleven - hitting the side netting with a long-range effort.

Jose Baxter, left on the substitutes bench at kick-off, was introduced as Clough looked to improve his side’s intensity, and looked the most likely to break the deadlock.

Harry Maguire, the young centre-half, was withdrawn in the second half, and replaced by Terry Kennedy after picking up a knock.

Chris Porter, Ben Davies, Matt Hill and Stephen McGinn also returned to Clough’s starting line-up, with Ryan Flynn and Michael Doyle also rested.

Stefan Scougall and Bob Harris were missing through injury.
