Sheffield United defied odds of 33/1 in their dramatic comeback victory over Gillingham, with Football League sponsor Sky Bet all but writing the Blades off heading towards stoppage-time.
The Gills thought they had snatched a late win of their own when Luke Norris fired them ahead after 83 minutes, only for Michael Higdon and Jamie Murphy to fire Nigel Clough’s men to victory.
Saturday’s dramatic win saw the Blades climb to seventh in the Sky Bet League 1 table and resulted in their promotion odds being trimmed from 2/1 to 15/8, while they are the same price to make it back-to-back victories in next Saturday’s short trip to Chesterfield.
The Spireites enjoyed no such last-gasp heroics as Notts County held out for a 1-1 draw, prompting their promotion odds drift to 8/1.
Indeed, the Blades were alone in enjoying success in the region, with rivals Sheffield Wednesday losing 2-1 at Cardiff while, also in the Championship, Rotherham went down to two early Ipswich goals.
Sky Bet now make the Owls 9/1 for promotion while the Millers have been cut to 2/1 for an immediate return to League 1.
Elsewhere, Barnsley and Doncaster were both subject to 3-0 defeats to Swindon and Walsall, prompting their top-six odds to drift to 11/4 and 9/2 respectively.
