Blackwell guards against injury crisis

SHEFFIELD United manager Kevin Blackwell will wrap some of his most experienced players in cotton wool as he looks to prevent an injury crisis wrecking the club's promotion campaign.

As The Star revealed yesterday, Blackwell is loathe to enter the loan market to provide temporary cover for the suspended Matthew Kilgallon after confirming it would take an investment of around 40,000 to sign a replacement.

With Preston North End set to arrive at Bramall Lane on Saturday, followed by a tough trip to fellow Premier League hopefuls Bristol City on Tuesday, Blackwell must think long and hard before he pitches the likes of Chris Morgan, Ugo Ehiogu and Gary Speed into full blown training sessions.

Blackwell said: "We've got another gruelling period coming up and we don't want to lose more people.

"It's important that we try to keep everybody fit because we want as a few disruptions as possible.

"Obviously losing Killa is a blow and although we've got some real quality in that area - whatever combination of the three I pick it would be one of the best partnerships in the Championship - we don't want someone else to become unavailable."

Having seen Kilgallon lose his appeal against the red card he received during last weekend's Steel City derby, Blackwell will remind Ehiogu and Morgan of their responsibilities before Preston's visit.

Meanwhile, members of United's squad will sign autographs from 2pm on October 30 at the club's new store at TJ Hughes.

Players will also make an appearance at a Halloween Party, priced 3, from 4:30pm on October 31 which is open to Junior Blades members accompanied by an adult.

United legend Tony Currie will be at Asda in Handsworth on October 27, Crystal Peaks on October 28 and Meadowhall on October 29.

Next month's home game against Plymouth has been designated as a Family Fun Day including a 'Kids for a Quid' promotion.
