Bitter-sweet job for Speed’s pal

editorial image

CHRIS Coleman, new manager of Wales, has spoken of his regrets at taking the job over following the death of his friend Gary Speed.

The 41-year-old succeeds former Sheffield United boss Speed, who died in November, aged 42.

Coleman admitted it was a “bitter-sweet” feeling for him. “On one hand it’s probably the proudest moment of my career, but then to be given that opportunity because of the circumstances nobody could foresee ... it’s bitter-sweet for me” he said.

“I was very close friends with Gary, 30 years, so it’s difficult for me. But I’m very proud to be the new manager and I’m also very sad because of the situation.”
