The statistics paint a confusing picture for punters seeking a goals-related flutter ahead of Sheffield United’s FA Cup fourth round trip to Preston.

Last season’s two meetings between the pair saw both teams find the net, a scenario that’s 9/10 with Stan James to be replicated in this one but the four clashes preceding last term produced a total of just two goals so a case can be made for a match tally of fewer than three here at 3/4 via Ladbrokes.

Just a fortnight ago though, Nigel Clough’s men edged out North End 2-1 so many punters might fancy the 90 minutes to produce three or more goals (6/5, BetVictor).

Confident United supporters can back their side at 13/5 courtesy of betway to keep a clean sheet at Deepdale, where bet365 chalk them up at 9/2 to triumph ‘to nil’ and at the other end Winner.com post 7/5 against the Blades breaking the deadlock.

Marc McNulty opened the scoring in the third round game at QPR and also against Preston two weeks ago, a feat BetVictor make him 15/2 to repeat.

Alternatively, Stan James price Jamie Murphy at 17/2 to net first and it’s an identical price, this time at BetVictor, for Jose Baxter to put Clough’s charges 1-0 up.

At Pride Park, it’s 4/5 (William Hill) for both teams to get on the scoresheet as Chesterfield visit Championship Derby County.

It’s 11/5 with bet365 for the Spireites to do so before their opponents and with three goals in his last two outings, Sam Clucas will be well backed at 11/1 thanks to Skybet to be responsible for that opener.

Predictably though, Eoin Doyle is considered the main goal threat for Paul Cook’s troops, Paddy Power rating the Irish front man at 13/2 to grab the first.

Stan James are predicting that the clash between MK Dons and Barnsley will generate at least three goals, an outcome they offer at 8/13 and betway mark 23/10 against the Tykes firing the first of those.

That opener finally, is 10/1 via bet365, to be struck by Alex Kiwomya.
