Jamal Campbell-Ryce could still have a critical role in deciding where Sheffield United are playing their football next season despite returning to Notts County on loan, writes James Shield.

United’s League One rivals are scheduled to face MK Dons, Swindon Town and Bradford City before Scunthorpe’s visit to Meadow Lane on March 21 while Preston North End, another of his parent club’s promotion rivals, must also face Shaun Derry’s side.

LISTEN: Nigel Clough explains Campbell-Ryce loan

Nigel Clough, explaining yesterday’s decision to allow Campbell-Ryce to depart, albeit on a temporary basis, said: “Jamal is a good professional and he has contributed heavily towards our success at times this season, but with the squad now looking stronger than it has at any other point during the campaign, starting opportunities have become more limited.

“So it is fantastic that this opportunity will allow him to play for a team he knows well at a vital stage in the season and he will help Shaun Derry’s side finish the season well.”

Campbell-Ryce, aged 31, has made 32 appearances since joining United from County during the close season. Although he must remain with Derry’s squad for 28 days, Clough can then recall him to Bramall Lane should his services be required. Campbell-Ryce, who missed Tuesday’s victory over Rochdale, is expected to feature for County against Port Vale tomorrow.

Clough added: “At the present time, it is a very good deal for all parties and that was an important factor.”
